Game of Thrones: Taking a closer look.

Not only is Game of Thrones the best series, currently, with a strong story line, but it also has the most amazing garments. Throughout this whole article, while writing it, I had goose bumps, just because I am so excited about the new series. If you are not watching Game of thrones, you are missing out! Game of Thrones has characters from zombie like creatures to plant-like children living in a tree, from dragons to witches and hillbillies to Kings and Queens. But beside all of these amazing characters, they are dressed in gowns and crowns, rags and cloaks which are made by individuals especially for the characters and I would like to share with my readers more information on the ladies behind the phenomenal costumes!

Michele Carragher is the hand embroiderer who is the only hand embroiderer on the show and it can take her up to two weeks to complete a highly-detailed piece (and then we as the viewer only get to see the costume on television for a few seconds) and the more avishly embroidered , the richer the wearer. The embroidery on the clothes include rich embellishments, mica flakes, beads, features, gemstones and fish scale sequins.

Michele Clapton is the costume designer and she is the lead costume designer on the set for GOT. She has won two Emmy awards for Outstanding Costumes on season two and season four’s costumes. She designs the costumes according to the script and she has to analyze the characters and she then has to build their story into what they wear. She and her team are even responsible for making the armor (and do you guys remember the armor of the Unsullied, which was identical, detailed and precise. Just to think there were hundreds of them! )

The color also plays a big role in the series, since Cercei was originally not seen in a lot of red, but as the story continued and she became more asserted, her costumes become brighter red and then turned into a blood red, and finally it went black which indicated that she was in mourning.

Cercei and Margaery have the most costumer (SPOILER), well up until Margaery died. Margaery wore the most expensive single costume which was her wedding gown where each rose was hand wrapped.

The budget for each episode is six million dollars !!!

Season 7’s costumes will have a lot less color compared to the previous seasons. When you are watching the next episode of GOT, pay attention to the costume and take all of the hand work into consideration.

What was your favorite costume from all the seasons of GOT?

  1. Oh! I’m so glad you did this post! That’s insane that they only have one embroider on the show! Like, whaaaa????? Also, I remember that I pinned Margaery’s dress on my pinterest, but I had no idea that it was Margaery’s dress at the time!

    1. That is such a stuuning dress, Margaery’s wedding dress. And it is the most expensive garment on the show. And we only saw it for like a few second. So much work goes into the costumes…. but i feel the garments don’t get the recognition which they deserve. So this was really an awesome article to do. And so interesting.

      Thanks for reading!

      2. I should definitely check that out! I just hope Arya gets something nice to wear for a change since sge has been in thos rags for far to long. Hahahahhaha.
And i was so shock to lock that even the armour and shields are made by the designing team. Like when i watch the series i never wonder about stuff like this, about where it came from or who made it.

      3. Haha I hope she does too, but I can’t imagine her doing so because that isn’t her personality. I know! Neither did I!

    1. That’s exactly how I felt when I started watching the show. In the beginning its quite confusing. But once you get to know the characters and families it is amazing. It’s so full of surprises. I’m addicted too! 😂🤣
