The lingo of fashion.

Fashion reveals ones status symbol because everyone judges a stranger by their clothing and treats them accordingly. High class society has more money to spend on clothes than the lower or middle classes. Clothing items are bought to enhance prestige and rank. In the 1880’s during the days of the Egyptians they indicated rank and status by the use of sandals, the Egyptian with a high status in society wore sandals while the middle and lower class did not have money to buy sandals. In the period of the 1880’s the high tight collar was worn to indicate status because the collar lifted the chin up which signifies pride and allowed them to look over the less fortunate people. Clothes reveal information or misinformation about the person wearing the garments. Clothes reveal the age, status, occupation, opinions, mood and taste of the wearer. Now, you may ask how does your clothes tell a lie. When dressing up for a wedding or funeral event, there are certain norms, which makes your outfit not your own language of fashion. Clothes don’t always indicate a true reflection of the individuals wearing the garments, through the use of the fabricated representation in clothing it is possible to hide the identity about yourself, but by disguising it the individuals wont be able to express themselves through clothing items.

The truth is clothes was created to protect humans against the cold climate and animal enemies which was worn as an amour. Clothes were made to protect humans from dangerous activities such as dangerous occupations or sport, including the padded clothing of dirt racers. All of the functions of clothing thus far is protection against physical danger. We wear hats to protect our faces from the sun and not to burn, we wear shoes to protect us from hurting our feet and we wear jackets in the winter to protect us from the cold. The protective functions of clothing on a psychological level incudes the influence of magical and spirits. Clothes or garments give the protection against the general unfriendliness of the world. Woman wear slim waisting corsets to reflect a slimmer body to the world, people wear cross necklaces to protect them and woman wear high heels to portray a taller figure to the world which are all worn to fit in even if it makes you stand out.

The truth is clothes that are decorated with embroidery or trimmings add needlessly to the cost of garments. Patterns and decorations on clothing items reveals the status symbol of the person wearing the garment. When wearing geometric patterns there is a desire to follow the line, referring to stripes, checks or plaids an organised effort is expressed. There are certain fashion elements which evokes meaning like the link to formal design. Angularity is symbolic to do with masculinity and curved and linear forms are associated with femininity. Clothing decorations is an aesthetic act through which individuals communicate in a way that present themselves. The form of a society’s language depends on the following factors environmental resources, technical developments and cultural standards for judging what is pretty. Dressing up in a certain way contradicts your mood but does not support it. By dressing up or dressing down creates a mood that is portrayed. Dress is the cue that communicates a mood.

Woman’s clothes are intended to make them look beautiful and attractive because men choose their partners according to their attractiveness. Woman’s clothes are made according to the seduction principle which means that they are sex conscious clothes. As a result and which means that the dominant function of woman’s clothing is sexual attraction. There are certain clothing items of woman who does not have a sex appeal, such as a police uniform of a woman to require authority and respect and to be in control. But the usage of a uniform has the result of group looking similar as a consequence an identical group of persons exist in uniform and there is no space for individuality. As a result the identity is replaced with a stereotype version of the clothing style. Men on the other hand wear their clothes according to the hierarchical principle which is class conscious clothes.

Colour is easily used to indicate your mood. By wearing loud clashing colours attention is wanted, while soft harmonious hues would rather refer to you being at ease, comfortable and sophisticated. By avoiding to wear colours an illusion is created that you are trying to be unbecoming. Dark hues are associated with formal and serious reasons while a light hue is associated with leisure.

Clothes communicate a wide range of ‘words’ or ‘stories’, by wearing a soft collar for business wear the assumption of the lack of rigid form is corresponding with the slackness in the person wearing the item, while the stiff collar is a symbol and sign of duty. Tightness of clothing plays a role in how you as the wearer is characterised. Tightness by its firms pressure on the body may symbolise a firm control over ourselves. The environment that we are in, also plays a role in the way we act. In a human environment with unsympathetic people with who we have nothing in common , who we are scared of and see superior, we draw our clothes tight against our bodies to protect us and be a shield between them.

To be comfortable in the clothes you choose to wear, your clothes should reflect your personality. What happens a lot of the time is that the outer layer which is the body that wears the clothes don’t always correspond with your beliefs, personality, likes or status. It is not fair to say that all clothing items only have one set of rules or meaning. Clothing trends change so much and that influences the meaning of the clothing from this year to the following year. Clothing styles and meaning also change from group to group, a meaning of clothes does not correspond with all the members of the society at the same time. Undercoding communicates the meaning of clothes, undercoding refers to the lack of secure and trustable interpretation of people’s body language, facial expressions or performances. Clothing is based on an aesthetic code which is communicated in a subtle way. The rejection or acceptance of the code will determine whether the fashion item will be a fad or a trend. As stated earlier, clothing gains different responses from different social groups. The universal meaning of clothing ‘s meaning is differentiated in different people’s taste , social identity and access to the symbolic wares of a society. Thus there will never be one language that explains the fashion of clothes.
